CHAPTER 15

Cassie walked into the diner parking lot and waved to Tessa who walked toward the diner door.

“So?” Tessa asked eagerly.

“I think I figured out how David was killed. But it’s just a theory, I can’t prove it.” Cassie met Tessa’s eyes.

“Tell me.” Tessa held her gaze.

“Not here.” Cassie gestured to the jeep.

As Cassie started toward the jeep, she checked her phone. She had missed a text from Sebastian. She paused to read it.

Are you coming over tonight?

Cassie smiled at the text.

“Cassie? Are you coming?” Tessa turned back toward her.

“Yes, right behind you.” Cassie sent a quick text back to Sebastian.

Yes, I’ll be there soon.

“You can tell me about your theory on the way home.” Tessa started back toward the jeep.

“First, I think I know where Haden might be.” Cassie opened her door. She settled in the passenger seat and told Tessa what Bonnie had told her.

“Those shacks have been pretty much abandoned.” Tessa fastened her seat belt. “I haven’t been out there for ages.”

“Maybe we should go out to the fishing shacks and see if we can find him,” Cassie suggested.

“It’s late, it would be very hard to find him in the dark. I think we should start again in the morning. I need to get up early to bake the sticky buns and take them to the bake sale. I think it might be better if we both get some rest. So, where am I taking you, home? Your place, or Sebastian’s?”

“Sebastian’s.” Cassie smiled. “How did your evening with Mark go?”

“It was more like just about an hour.” Tessa started the engine. “He gave me a lead on Linda. When I told him about our suspicions about David’s death he started making some calls. According to him, Linda wasn’t at her friend’s house because she was at therapy.”

“Therapy?” Cassie looked over at her. “Is he sure about that?”

“He wouldn’t name his source, but he seemed fairly confident. I’d like to go confirm it. But obviously they won’t be open now. We’ll go in the morning.” Tessa pulled out of the parking lot. “So, what about the bees?”

“If my theory is right, his death was absolutely planned.” Cassie winced. “I think that someone put bees in his travel mug. Lots of bees. I think the killer put the bees in there, and they got very aggravated being trapped in a small space. Probably more aggravated when he picked up the mug and moved it around. So, when he lifted the lid off, they flew out and straight toward his face.”

“Which explains why he didn’t have time to shield his face.” Tessa gasped as she nodded. “That makes a lot of sense, Cassie. He would have been shocked, and the bees would have been angry and defensive. If they started stinging him right away, he probably panicked. No one would expect that kind of attack. It might explain why he didn’t have a chance to use his EpiPen.”

“It makes sense to me. I was opening a travel mug for Paul
